10 Reasons Why No NFL Team Will Trust Johnny Manziel
After a prolonged meltdown that saw him cut by the Cleveland Browns, fired by his agent, and arrested for domestic violence, Johnny Manziel has been in football limbo.
But after seemingly throwing his NFL career away through a number of immature and drunken mistakes, Manziel claims that he’s sober and working to return to the league.
Here are tweets from ESPN’s Ed Werder on the matter:
Johnny Manziel tells me he has achieved sobriety without professional assistance, needs to maintain and wants to play #NFL. (1/3)

Manziel when I asked his next goal: "PLAY FOOTBALL. A pre season game, anything I don't care what it is…" (2/3)

Manziel: "Only need one team to believe in me and I'll do anything to make that a possibility.'' (3/3)

It’s definitely interesting that Johnny Football appears to be serious about playing again. But should teams give him another chance?
Here are 10 reasons why NFL clubs would be wise to avoid him.
1. Johnny Manziel Has Been Down This Sobriety Road Before
This isn’t the first time that Manziel has claimed to be sober. His first time was in 2014, after his rookie season, when he checked into a Pennsylvania rehab facility.
During his second season, it was clear that Manziel wasn’t sober since videos quickly surfaced of him partying on the internet.
2. He Lied about a Partying Video to the Browns
There are many embarrassments in Cleveland Browns history, but one of the biggest is when Mike Pettine named Manziel the starter for the rest of the 2015 season — only to have the QB seen drinking at an Austin nightclub.
When rumors of the video surfaced, Manziel lied to the Browns about it. The only problem is that we’re not living in 1995, and everybody has a smartphone. Johnny Football was demoted to third string afterward.
3. He Doesn’t Have an Agent
During his life meltdown, Manziel’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, fired him not once — but twice. This was the first time in Rosenhaus’ 28-year career that he dumped an active player, which he did after finding that Manziel wasn’t serious about football.
Still without representation in 2017, it will be tough for Johnny Football to find a successful agent willing to take him on.
4. He’s a Quarterback – The Most Important Position
The NFL is a league of second and third chances, but these dwindle when you play the game’s most-important position.
It’s not like Manziel is just some backup defensive end or wide receiver that the team can quickly cut ties with. He’s a quarterback, and even the backup is crucial because he must help prepare the starter for games and serve as sideline help.
5. Manziel was Partying in Miami on New Year’s Eve
Here’s a great reason not to believe Manziel’s sobriety: just 3 weeks ago, he was ringing in 2017 at Miami’s LIV nightclub with a bottle of champagne while surrounded by women.
As if this isn’t bad enough, prosecutors are looking into how Manziel was in the same club as ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley, whom he’s supposed to stay away from due to a domestic violence incident.
6. He’s Desperate for Money and Selling Autographs at the Super Bowl
Could the sudden interest in football again be due to Manziel’s lack of money?
As Cleveland.com reports, he’ll be signing “anything” for $99 and taking selfies with fans for $50 at Houston-area malls during the Super Bowl.
7. He’s Dating a Hot Model and TV Star
I definitely can’t blame Manziel for this, but he’s currently linked to Bre Teisi, a hot model on Nick Cannon’s MTV show Wild n’ Out. Teisi was also the Corona girl during the Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto bout last year.
It’s kind of hard to be a hungry football player when you’ve got women like this falling at your feet.
8. Manziel Partied at a Casino the Night before a Browns Game
Although he was a third stringer, Manziel was still a member of the Cleveland Browns organization when he was spotted partying at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Casino the night before their final game of the 2015-16 season.
He was scratched from the game due to a concussion, then posted a picture of himself at home with his dog. As if this wasn’t already a murky situation, Manziel missed a mandatory Sunday meeting with the team medic, which all NFL players with concussions are required to do.
9. He Spent $1k at a Drug Paraphernalia Store
This past summer, Bob Hinton, the lawyer who was handling Manziel’s domestic violence case, accidentally sent a text to the Associated Press regarding his client’s drug problem.
“Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle,” Hinton texted.
He also discussed Manziel’s receipt for $1,018 at the Gas Pipe, a drug paraphernalia store. This isn’t good since it occurred less than a year ago.
10. Manziel’s Dad Doesn’t Even Trust Him
One of the biggest bombshells from the same story involving Manziel’s attorney is that his dad, Paul, doesn’t trust Johnny and worries that he might end up dead.
“He’s a druggie. It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie,” said Paul Manziel. “I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. He just hasn’t [sought] it yet. Hopefully he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. That’s about all you can say. I don’t know what else to say.”
“You have no idea. And the system failed. I had him in rehab and he escaped and the doctors let him go, and that is a whole other story. So I mean I had him [in rehab] and the system failed. It didn’t work.”
Given all the evidence within the last year or so, it’s hard to believe that Manziel can last an entire NFL season without screwing up again.
