Super Bowl ‘Cross Disciplinary’ Prop Bet Odds
–The Super Bowl is the biggest day of the year for North American sports betting.
–Prop bets are now the biggest part of the Super Bowl weekend ‘handle’ at sports books.
–These ‘cross disciplinary’ props are our take on the popular ‘cross sport’ Super Bowl props.
One of the more novel Super Bowl proposition bets is the ‘cross sport’ bet. These bets have been growing in popularity during the past few years and now you’ll find them at just about every decent sports book in Nevada, Europe and elsewhere.
The ‘cross sport’ prop is basically a ‘comparison’ prop with a twist–instead of a prop like ‘will Tom Brady or Matt Ryan have more touchdown passes’ it involves a statistic from another sport. Here’s a few from the William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada:
Which will be more?
Carey Price saves -1/2: -120
Atlanta Falcons points: +100
Which will be more?
Henrik Lundqvist saves: -110
Tom Brady completions -1/2: -110
Which will be more?
Connor McDavid points: +100
Total interceptions: -120
Which will be more?
Sunday English Premier League goals: +105
Brady/Ryan touchdown passes -1/2: -125
You get the idea. It’s a pretty clever idea that achieves a couple of things for the bookmaker–it gives them more Super Bowl prop bet variety and also drives interest in the other sporting events on the board.
So are these cross sport props worth betting? They can be. Doing the statistical analysis on the other sport is easy enough and the resulting wager can be more favorable than the ‘real’ prop. For example, let’s say you like the ‘Over’ in the total interceptions prop. If you were to play it at William Hill you’d be going OV 1.5 meaning that you’d have to get two interceptions to win and that a single interception gets you a loss. Now, if you were to take the ‘total interceptions’ in one half of the prop against Connor McDavid points it could put you in a situation where you could get a ‘push’ and not a loss if there’s only one INT. McDavid is averaging just over a point a game (1.16 PPG to be exact) so there’s a good chance he’ll play to his average and get a single point. He might get shut out entirely meaning you’ll just need one INT to cash the bet. Since the first of the year McDavid has played 15 games and in 9 of those he had a point total of either zero or one. Of course in the other six games he had 2 or more in which case you’d have a less advantageous number.
CROSS DISCIPLINARY SUPER BOWL PROP BETS
That’s simple enough but limiting these props to sports stifles my creativity. Thus, I’ve created the ‘cross disciplinary’ proposition bet. It’s the same concept but instead of matching a Super Bowl related performance against a stat from another sport we search far and wide for the comparison metric. In the list of ‘Cross Disciplinary Props’ below you’ll find matchups from the financial markets, music, weather and even literature. You can bet on the Super Bowl and enjoy an intellectual challenge at the same time.
