‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 24 Episode 10 Betting Odds

–This is the 24th season for ABC’s reality show.

–Another upset elimination in Episode 9 as Simone Biles went home despite a strong performance.

–The ‘Dancing With The Stars’ will air over two nights on Monday, May 22 and Tuesday May 23.

The media is suggesting that the Week 9 elimination of Simone Biles is more shocking than Heather Thomas’ dismissal earlier this year. That’s nonsense. Eliminations like these are practically foregone conclusions given the format of the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ scoring system. Only 50% of the result is based on the judges scores with 50% based on audience voting.

This format all but guarantees that the best dancers won’t necessarily make the finals, let alone win. It’s a very simple concept–some celebrities are more well known and others simply more likable. That’s one of the biggest reasons that athletes have been so successful on the show. Some have been decent dancers but their ‘ace in the hole’ is a devoted fanbase that supports their team or at the very last their sport. In the second season of ‘DWTS’ legendary NFL wide receiver finished second with fitness guru turned WWE diva Stacy Keibler finishing third. Dallas Cowboys’ great Emmitt Smith won the third season with Olympian Apollo Anton Ohno taking season 4. Multiple Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves won the fifth season and ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi won season six. Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson won season eight after Warren Sapp finished second in season 7.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver Hines Ward won season 12 with another wide receiver–Green Bay’s Donald Driver–winning season 14. Shawn Johnson finished second on the ‘All Star’ season 15. A couple more wide receivers–Jacoby Jones and Calvin Johnson–finished third in seasons 16 and 23. Notice a trend?

DON’T BLAME THE JUDGES

Another line of reasoning blames the judges. The premise is that the judges were “tougher” on Biles than on retired baseball catcher David Ross. Maybe, but that’s just the way these things work. The judges just don’t target the better dancers as we pointed out after a judge went after world champion bull rider Bonner Bolton (and was lucky not to catch a beating for it). This theory falls apart after it becomes evident that the writer is a Simone Biles fanboy:

The sad thing is that this perception of Simone being false or stale was incredibly incorrect. Simone might not be as bubbly as David or even as open with Rashad but she was one of the best dancers. Simone seemed to be held to a different standard to the other contestants. The judges also seemed to do this with Heather by often underscoring her but it is was particularly blatant with Simone. Simone should have been scored on par with Normani and Rashad. Simone was often as good as Normani and definitely better than Rashad but the judges didn’t see it that way and it allowed David and his fans to allow him to sneak into the finale.

The contestants know the scoring format going into the show. 50% is based on the audience vote and unless the audience is entirely comprised of dance critics there’s very little chance that the judges could ‘bury’ one contestant’s dancing ability. David Ross is a likable guy who spent much of his career with three of the most popular teams in baseball (Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox). The problem with Biles–and to a lesser extent Normani Kordei and Rashad Jennings (another NFL player, incidentially)–is that they’re not very charismatic. The writer in the previous quote essentially admits as much. Ross improved throughout the show and definitely hasn’t embarrassed himself as a dancer. That plus a large and enthusiastic fanbase got him into the finals. It’s one thing to call out incompetent judging such as Nevada Boxing Judge Cynthia Ross. She essentially resigned after a firestorm of criticism following the Floyd Mayweather/Canelo Alverez fight. The fight was a lopsided Mayweather domination but Ross called it a ‘draw’. It’s another thing entirely to blame the judges simply because they don’t see things the way you do.

Simone Biles definitely put up the numbers in her dances but her dull personality did her in. Here’s the Week Nine scorecard:
