2018 FIDE Candidates Tournament Round 10 Chess Betting Odds
–Chess is a surprisingly popular game among bettors–particularly in Europe.
–Magnus Carlsen is the reigning World Champion, a title he’s held since 2013.
–The tenth round of the FIDE Candidates Tournament to select the next World Championship challenger will take place on Thursday, March 22
The second half of the 2018 FIDE Candidates Tournament is at the midway point and at the moment it’s a two man competition. Fabiano Caruana beat Levon Aronian who was in a veritable ‘must win’ situation. It’s been a horrible tournament for Aronian who entered this event as the favorite. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov settled for a draw in his game against Alexander Grischuk. That leaves Caruana in sole possession of first place with Mamedyarov 1/2 point behind. Alexander Grischuk is the next on the table with 5 points leaving Ding Liren, and Sergey Karjakin in the next tier of competitors with 3.5 points.
Caruana had an opportunity to go a full point up on the rest of the field in his Round 9 game against Ding Liren but suffered a rare lapse in focus late:
“It’s kind of silly because I was looking at this. Somehow 68. h7 completely slipped my attention. Once you see it, it’s pretty obvious; it’s a pretty simple tactic if I had a few minutes. So I should have found it.”
He did catch a break with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov having to settle for a draw against struggling Levon Aronian. Aronian was in the better position before committing what he called a ‘crazy blunder’ snatching the draw from the ‘jaws of victory’.
These storylines set up the big Thursday matchup between Caruna and Mamedyarov. Mamedyarov has held his own against Caruna with 3 wins against 3 losses and 9 draws including one stalemate earlier in this tournament. Unfortunately for him, another draw might doom his chances to catch Caruna. Right now Caruna holds the second tiebreaker with 3 tournament wins against 2 for Caruna. Thursday’s match against Caruna might not be a ‘must win’ for Mamedyarov but it would sure help him to get a win. Caruna would no doubt be content with another draw.
