‘America’s Got Talent’ Season 12 Week 13 Betting Odds

–’America’s Got Talent’ has returned for its 12th season on NBC.

–This is the last of three quarterfinal rounds.

–Two ‘AGT’ shows will air this week–Tuesday, August 29 and Wednesday, August 30 at 8 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

The SPORTS BETTING EXPERTS coverage of ‘America’s Got Talent’ continues as we preview the final ‘quarterfinals’ elimination show. First, a quick procedural note–we’ve been numerating each show by ‘episode’ but with the live shows ‘AGT’ has gone to two episodes per week. For that reason we’ll refer to the ‘week’ instead of the ‘episode’ going forward. At this point, there are 29 acts remaining in the competition but that number will drop significantly following the Week 13 quarterfinal eliminations.

By now, you’re probably familiar with the rules and ‘gimmicks’ of the live shows. The ‘Judge’s Choice’ gives one act the chance to advanced based exclusively on a vote of the panel. Each judge picks one act and the one with the most votes goes through to the next round. The ‘Dunkin’ Save‘ is a gimmick sponsored by Dunkin Donuts that gives one low scoring act a chance to remain in contention. Three acts are announced as ‘eligible’ for the ‘Dunkin Save’ during the results show and the one that receives the most votes from viewers gets the reprieve.

SEASON TWELVE SPECIFICS

The host for Season Twelve is former supermodel Tyra Banks. This is her first season as host replacing Nick Cannon who had held the position for the previous eight seasons. Originally, it was announced that Cannon would be returning for Season Twelve but a nasty show biz spat between himself, NBC and the show’s producers left him on the outs. Here’s the storyline–Cannon announced in mid-February that he would be resigning as host citing the old standby ‘creative differences’. Some media wags suggested that it was a ‘you can’t fire me because I quit’ situation. Cannon had reportedly made disparaging remarks about NBC in his Showtime standup special. NBC refused to accept Cannon’s resignation and there was some speculation that he would be sued for breach of contract. Ultimately, cooler heads prevailed and the network settled on Banks. The four judges are familiar faces on the reality show circuit and return for the second season as a group. They are Mel B (aka the artist formerly known as ‘Scary Spice’ from the Spice Girls), Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell.

‘America’s Got Talent’ has been a huge ratings winner for NBC in Season 12. As we had expected, the return of the live shows gave an already dominant program a bigger boost in the rating. ‘AGT’ continues to dominate the competition on Tuesday and Wednesday night both in the timeslot and for the entire evening. The first run ‘AGT’ episodes have never failed to win their time slot and since the first three weeks when taped auditions were shown they’ve failed to win the entire week only once. That’s a bit of a technicality, however, since you’ll recall that there are now *two* ‘AGT’ episodes every week and the dynamic now is that the ‘performance show’ on Tuesday gets the #1 ranking while the ‘results’ show on Wednesday gets the runner up spot.

There was a minor controversy last week when Mel B reacted negatively to a one-liner from Simon Cowell. The Tuesday performance show was plagued with technical difficulties and one of the acts that suffered as a result was illusionist Demian Aditya. He eventually had to scrap his illusion due to the technical issues which prompted Simon to quip “I kind of imagine this would be like Mel B’s wedding night. A lot of anticipation, not much promise or delivery.” Not a bad one liner but Mel B flipped out and stormed off the stage after throwing a cup of water at the quick witted Englishman. She quickly returned to her position on the judging podium and the more she explains it the more it sounds like a ‘work’ or a pro wrestling style ‘angle’. In fact, that’s why I didn’t do the obvious ‘will Mel B throw water’ or ‘will Mel B storm offstage’ prop–the whole thing reeks of being contrived.
