‘Celebrity Big Brother’ Betting Odds Week 1

–This is the first season of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ produced for the US market.

–’Big Brother’ is a spin-off of a Dutch TV series of the same name.

–’Celebrity Big Brother’ will run for 2 1/2 weeks on CBS TV beginning on February 7.

‘Celebrity Big Brother’, as the name suggests, is a version of the hit CBS reality show involving celebrities of varying degrees of fame. The celebrity format has been a big hit in the UK where the 21st season was recently completed. It’s also found success in other countries but the list is somewhat odd–the best markets for ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ other than the UK have been India (11 seasons), Bulgaria (9 seasons), Mexico (5 seasons), Spain (5 seasons), Germany (5 seasons) and Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina (5 seasons).

This is the first time the format has been done in the United States and CBS has presumably scheduled it as ‘counter programming’ to the Winter Olympics. The debut episode is set for February 7 with the finale on February 25. Other episodes will air on February 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, and 24 which makes it a tough oddsmaking challenge. The cast of celebrities are something of a dubious lot far below the ‘star power’ of even other reality shows like ‘Dancing With The Stars’. Entertainment Weekly helpfully points out that 9 of the 11 ‘houseguests’ have appeared on either ‘Dancing With The Stars’ or ‘Celebrity Apprentice’. The ‘biggest’ names are likely former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, Sugar Ray lead vocalist (and reality show veteran) Mark Grath or the ‘artist formerly known as NBA star Ron Artest’ who now goes by the moniker Metta World Peace and has a stint on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ to his credit.

The format and rules of ‘Big Brother’ are typical of the genre. A group of contestants live together in a house isolated from the outside world. Contestants get kicked out for violating a list of rules, they can leave at any time of their own volition but the general idea is that they keep getting voted off the island…er…out of the house until one remains and claims a prize of a cool $250 grand. There’s also an audience voting component and a few hidden idol-esque power ups to keep it interesting. The pace of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ will be ‘fast and furious’ with the entire competition jammed into a mere 2.5 weeks. Word is that two houseguests will be eliminated per week and that means the dynamic of the show will change quickly from one episode to the next.
