Derrick Rose Rape Case Adds Bizarre Twist To NBA Offseason
Even under ‘best case scenario’ it was a dicey proposition for the New York Knicks to trade for Derrick Rose. On one hand, he’s a former NBA MVP with the ability to dominate games. On the other hand, he’s considered something of a ‘head case’ and is definitely injury prone. Rose signed a $94.8 million contract with the Chicago Bulls in 2011. He hasn’t played more than 66 games in a season since. In the last five years he’s played a total of 166 games which includes missing the entire 2012-2013 NBA season. To be fair, he had a torn ACL and there’s no doubt he was really injured. It’s just that he wasn’t overly anxious to start playing again.
Rose played an average of 33.2 games per season over the course of his big payday contract with Chicago. In other words, the Bulls paid Rose well over a half million dollars per game ($566,225 per game to be exact). Chicago owner Jerry Reinsdorf couldn’t wait to get Rose out of town and sent him to the New York Knicks in exchange for Robin Lopez and guards Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon. Knicks President Phil Jackson also signed his former Bulls teammate Joakim Noah to a four-year, $72 million deal as a free agent.
One of the big reasons that Reinsdorf wanted Rose gone is that he was terrible for the chemistry of the team and generally a huge distraction. That was before the recent fiasco involving a $21.5 million civil suit in Los Angeles over a 2013 rape allegation. The Los Angeles Police Department has also confirmed that they’re investigating it to see whether criminal charges are appropriate (and have been since December 2015). The civil case is still in the pretrial stage but it’s already become a freakshow and media circus with Rose saying he ‘wants to be treated like Tupac Shakur’ and his accuser wanting to use allegations that he cheated on his SATs while a student at the University of Memphis as a reflection of his character.
So the Derrick Rose Circus Sideshow is now officially the New York Knicks’ problem. At this point, they’re hoping that he’s able to play well and stay healthy despite the distractions. They’re also hoping that the entire deal wasn’t a ‘sucker bet’.
