‘Project Runway’ Season 16 Episode 7 Betting Odds

Samantha Rei was our top choice to get eliminated in Episode 6 of ‘Project Runway’ and that’s exactly what happened. Rei had been bottom three in two of the first five episodes and that sealed her fate. Rei had an uphill battle from the start. She seems like a nice enough person but doesn’t have the most forceful personality. Her design aesthetic didn’t mesh well with the challenges in the early part of the season. It was evident that she wouldn’t go deep in the competition when it became evident that she didn’t get any screen name–or as TV Line observed in their Episode 4 recap she’d had ‘about 10 seconds of screen time’ all season. The judges also thought that her designs were too one dimensional. Obviously, that’s a very subjective comment and designers are also panned for not being ‘one dimensional’ enough.
Things are not good with the Buitendorp twins. It’s starting to become apparent that Shawn is essentially gravy training off her sister Claire. Tim Gunn observes this reality though he notes that helping another designer doesn’t go against any official rule. Here’s how EW described the situation in their Episode 6 recap:
Once back in the workroom, the twins are already annoying their fellow contestants. Claire keeps saying how she wants to focus on her own work, but Shawn is constantly asking her for help, and she continually gives it to her without complaint. And when Shawn asks Claire to jump, she just asks how high. It’s always “one more question.” And it’s starting to get old with everyone around them: Batani rolls her eyes behind their back, and both Kenya and Margarita talk about it in their confessionals. However, not a single designer confronts them about their workroom shenanigans. This really is a great group of nice people. (Season 16 #forthewin! #modelsoffduty! #hashtags!)
Kenya Freeman made clear that the other designers are well aware of the score:
And the judges weren’t the only ones raising their eyebrows over the twins’ collaborative efforts. During one of her confessional interviews, Kenya said, “Shawn can’t work or create anything if her sister doesn’t help her. Claire has a good shot at making beautiful clothes, but as long as she comes to the rescue of her sister, I don’t think she can make it.”
Interestingly enough, Episode 7 is a ‘pairs competition’ in which the designers pair up to put together an outfit. No one is really clear if that means two designers will get the boot but if that’s the case the bell might be tolling for the Buitendorp twins.
