‘Top Chef Colorado’– Episode 7 Betting Odds

–’Top Chef Colorado’ is the title of the 15th season of the ‘Top Chef’ franchise.

–The finale of ‘Top Chef Colorado’ was filmed in Aspen during the Food and Wine Classic.

–Episode 7 of ‘Top Chef Colorado’ will air on January 18, 2018 at 10:00 PM Eastern on Bravo

One of the smartest pieces of advice I ever received was to just not worry about things. Many things take care of themselves and by not worrying it leaves you in a good frame of mind to deal with the things you *do* need to deal with. That definitely happened in Episode 6 of ‘Top Chef Colorado’. After 2 contestants were added/returned to the competition I was scratching my head about how to integrate them into my power ratings and evaluate them for my betting odds. After Week 6, the problem has solved itself.

Brother Luck was eliminated and I’m sorry to see him go just because I think having the name ‘Brother’ is really cool. He made the tactical mistake of serving a non-German dish (a Odell 90 Shilling chai tea radler with summer sausage egg roll with bok choy, apple and potato) in a German food contest. Judge Tom Colicchio observed that the creation (which sounds really tasty) “just didn’t feel German at all.” I thought highly enough of brother Luck to have him as my third choice to win the whole thing at +750 heading into last week’s show. Then again, I got the vibe he could go either way and also had him as a +700 third choice to be eliminated.

The contest lost another chef as Lee Ann Wong left the show as quickly as she had returned. Wong, who owns and runs Koko Head Cafe in Hawaii, is three months pregnant. The previous competition outside in the snow really took a toll on her and she had to be taken to the hospital. Turns out that she was suffering from altitude sickness and dehydration and the doctors advised her to return to sea level. That’s tough to do in Colorado to she had to withdraw and head home. Tough break for her but it make it a lot easier to reconfigure the odds and power ratings.

That leaves us with these updated ‘Top Chef’ power ratings. I’ve adapted the same format that I used for ‘Project Runway’ this season giving points for ‘High’ finishes in the elimination challenge and subtracting points for ‘Low’ finishes. It worked reasonably well for ‘Project Runway’ until the finale and was particularly effective in revealing ‘false favorites’. It might not be quite as accurate for ‘Top Chef’ due to the absence of a weekly challenge ‘runner up’ for both the winner and the elimination ‘victim’. I debated giving more emphasis to superlative and substandard performances (3 for a win, 2 for ‘High’ and -2 for ‘Low) but we’ll roll with this scoring criteria for now. I don’t have any good ideas on how I can come up with a proper valuation for the new/returning contestants so for now I’ll leave them on the sidelines and revisit things next week:

WIN = +2
HIGH = +1
IN = 0
LOW = -1
